Operations Director Jackie Royall recently helped raise the profile of the company even further and manufacturing in general when she was named Welsh Woman of the Year 2002. Jackie, who joined the company two-and-a-half years ago, is the first women in manufacturing to receive the prestigious award and its came in the same month and she also received the Western Mail's Management Achievement Award and the Dale Carnegie Leadership Award.

The Inside Welsh Industry visit will cover continuous improvement in People Issues, Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma.

PerkinElmer Human Resources administrator Jackie Thomas, said the factory is always delighted to host visits to its Llantrisant Business Park-located factory.

Jackie said: "During the Inside Welsh Industry visit we will show how the business has been turned around in the past two-and-a-half years through better leadership of the team.

"The attitude of the workforce has been transformed from one of traditional manufacturing roles and a closed door mentality to one which is more open, encourages free communication and removes of barriers.

"The transition, as in any form of change, has not been without some pain but we have emerged a leaner, stronger, more confident operation with a more committed workforce, better equipped for the future."

The union recognising plant, which employs 86, seeks to involve staff as much as possible in the operation of the business and makes a particular point of celebrating success.

The success of the plant has been recognised by PerkinElmer internationally John Vitale from the company's Human Resources Global Operations told staff: "The results show what can be accomplished when you unleash the incredible power of people working together towards a common goal.

"I applaud courage, your commitment to excellence and your willingness to trade-in the traditional 'tell' management approach for the real power of participation and ownership."
